is to have your dog drink fluid 10-15 minutes prior
to
starting
an activity, and every 20-30 minutes during the activity.
Weighing your dog before and after the activity is also

afterwards.
While exercising and
during a stressful event, your dog’s fluid
level will become depleted as a result of increased perspiration;
this condition leads to dehydration in the absence of an adequate canine fluid
replacement
refreshment.
While
it is not possible to prevent all injuries that occur during
exercise, studies have shown that injury rates
may be lowered
by as much as 25% if proper precautions are taken. There
are numerous factors that potentially predispose a
dog to injury,
and while there are many sports-specific variables that
are beyond the scope of K-9 Quencher, there are
steps that you can take to reduce the chances of dehydration
or an injury.

Dear K9-Quencher,
I am an animal health technician who also does work with
Boxer Rescue Ontario and K9 Rescue Me. Every year we hold
a very large and successful fundraiser called the ‘K9-Rescue
Me Walk-a-thon’. Last year (2005) our event was held
on one of the hottest days of the year. With so many different
breeds of dogs participating in the walk on a hot day, you
can easily see that we ran into trouble with hydration. It’s
my personal experience that many people don’t recognize
the symptoms of dehydration quickly enough, therefore I ride
around the course on a bike and stop people who’s dogs
are in need of re-hydration. This past year I introduced
a new item, the K9-Quencher, into my portable water source.
I carried water with me and would measure and mix the powder
as needed for each dog.
I was amazed at the difference this product made in the effects
of hydration on the dogs. Dogs who were dehydrated but refused
water from their owners would readily gulp up the K9-Quencher
mix. As a person working in the field of vet medicine, I
was pleased to know that they were restoring their electrolyte
balance as well as re-hydrating themselves. We averted many
cases of heat stroke and serious dehydration only because
I was using the K9-Quencher. I am now a firm believer in
