PREVENTING BOREDOM
Every
day, millions of faithful four-legged friends are left
behind as their owners head off to work. These pets
spend hours alone, dividing their time between sleeping
and playing. While this may sound like a relaxing lifestyle,
the WALTHAM CENTRE FOR PET NUTRITION (WCPN) reports
that pets can and do become bored.
"Many
owners feel a pang of guilt when leaving their pets," said
James H. Sokolowski, DVM, Ph.D., veterinary communications
manager for WALTHAM USA, Inc. "Simple alterations
to the house and yard, and providing the proper toys,
can help reduce the boredom and make a pet's time alone
much more entertaining and enjoyable."
Mount
mirrors in the play areas of young animals. Not only
is this
amusing for the dog, but it also helps in the pet's socialization.
Choose toys for your cat/dog that stimulate active, entertaining
play, such as weighted balls that roll in unpredictable
directions, and rubber chew toys in various shapes and
textures. Rotate the toys you leave with your pet so
that each day it has "new" toys.
Consider
a second pet if you are going to be leaving your dog/cat
alone for extended periods of time. Dogs, and to a lesser
degree cats, are pack animals and need companionship.
Leave a radio
or the television set on while you are out to keep your
pet company.
Install
a "doggie" door
so that your pet has access to an enclosed outdoor run
or yard.
If
confined indoors, make sure your pet has access to a
window or
patio door so that it can see outside.
